The right to choose...

Samantha is 17 months old... precious beyond words... deeply loved by her mother, by her father, by her grandparents, aunts and uncles.  Somehow she slipped outside to the back yard without anyone noticing... and fell into the family pool.  For several days she laid in a hospital bed, clinging to life by a thread.
Prayer warriors were enlisted across the country to pray for her... I was one of them.  How I begged God on behalf of this precious little girl, but mostly on behalf of her heart-broken, grief stricken parents.  Sadly, though, after a valiant battle of many days, Samatha died.

I wanted to vomit.  I wanted to lay prostrate on the floor and wail... "Why God?"  How do her young parents reconcile such a tragedy?  I didn't know Samantha, nor do I know her parents.  I am linked to her only by a friend of the family.  But it felt so real to me... like an all too familiar nightmare that had come true.  I couldn't shake the haunting thoughts of grief and agony I am certain I would be feeling were she mine!  I simply could NOT even imagine it!
Nor could I shake the reality that as this devestating news was arriving on my computer screen, a hopeful Mom, like me, was rejoicing in the news that her child was to receive the gift of life that could have only come through this precious child's death.  Thoughts and emotions raced through my heart and mind... crashing into one another.  How can I reconcile the truth that I am avoiding?  For Rachel to have life, another precious child like Samantha will have to die.  My personal grief will only be averted through the grief of someone else.  Someone like the Mom I am crying for tonight.
I am tempted to let my imagination take me to places I simply can not allow myself to go...  Because, as I learned from the writings of Elisabeth Elliot so many years ago,  "God does not supply grace for our imagination."  Rather His all-sufficient grace will be available for my every need, at the very moment I need it!  I have a choice to make.  Will I choose to go to places in my heart and mind without the grace of God to meet me there?  Or will I choose joy for today, knowing that His perfect grace will meet me in that place when I need Him most?

Early in our marriage, Doug was a U.S. Marine Corps jet pilot.  He flew the AV8-B, known to most people as the Harrier.  But wives of Harrier pilots knew the jet by another name... "The Widow Maker".  Shortly after Doug finished training in the Harrier, he had an accident, that except through God's mercy, would have left me a widow with a 5 week old newborn son.  While flying on a low level flight over the bayous of Louisiana, going over 400 miles per hour, a turkey buzzard crashed through the windscreen of Doug's jet, half of it hitting his upper left arm and chest, and the other half sucking into the engine of the plane.  His left arm (coincidentally the one used to land the jet!) was paralyzed from the impact.  Doug has little memory of those moments inside the shattered cockpit of his Harrier and almost no recollection of landing the plane.  He simply remembers a few snapshot thoughts between he and God and then waking up in the Emergency Room of an Air Force base in southern Mississippi.
I remember clearly getting "the" phone call at home more than a thousand miles away.  Those were the days before cell phones and even caller ID, so I had no idea who was calling when I picked up the phone that afternoon.  Imagine my surprise to hear Doug's squadron commander on the other end of the line.  Immediately I knew that this was not an everyday phone call!
My mind began to race!  Something has happened!  But Doug must still be alive or a black car would be at my curb and this gentleman would be at my front door... not on the other end of this phone call!  He must have read my racing thoughts and quickly assured me that Doug was alive and being attended to at the Air Force base where he managed to land the plane.  Doug would call home as soon as he was able.  In the meantime, I was to pack and be ready to catch a flight to Mississippi the following day.  I anxiously waited next to the phone for what seemed like an eternity...  Finally it rang!  I could hear Doug's voice on the other end, and I breathed a very heavy sigh of relief!  He didn't really sound like himself, but he said that they were simply "checking him out" and then they would release him... He guessed he would be out of there in 30 minutes and would call back then.  I waited...  3:30 PM...  6:30 PM...  9:30 PM...  12:30 AM...  STILL waiting!  His "30 minutes" had turned into hours and hours without a word from Mississippi.  I was quickly becoming beside myself!!!  Somehow I found a phone number for the Air Force base and begged the poor soul on the other end to connect me to the base hospital Emergency Room.  "I'm sorry, Ma'am",  the ER tech said, "We don't have a Captain McCary here.... He was sent up to ICU hours ago!  You can call the main switchboard tomorrow morning and they can connect you to an ICU nurse...."   Click.  She was gone.  I was alone at home with my 5 week old baby.  I flopped myself across the twin-sized bed in the nursery and I sobbed!  I had no idea what was happening more than a thousand miles away and I wouldn't until morning!  It was fertile ground for my imagination... and all my fears were suddenly bigger than life!  I had little strength in those days to resist the pull of my imagination, and I quickly discovered what a miserable wreck I could be when I refused to wait upon the Lord to catch up to my "reality" with His grace!  None of my imaginations proved to be true... Doug would be released from the hospital shortly after I finally arrived and would even return to flying a few months later.  There was a lesson for me in that night of agony, but sadly, I missed it!
I became quite experienced at avoiding my fears, but one night several years later, following the death of a close friend in the Harrier, I let my imagination go wild!  Doug was on a night training flight.  I had two small children at that point and they were finally tucked in for the night.  I climbed into my own bed, exhausted.  But as I laid there, in the dark, I felt strangely alone.  What would I do, I wondered, if I lost Doug?  Where would I go?  How would I pay the bills?  Would I remarry?  How would I raise my children alone?  My imagination took over from there and I literally worked myself into an emotional frenzy.  If Doug had walked in from his flight at that precise moment, he would have discovered a pathetic, sobbing wife who was literally attending his funeral in her imagination!  But in that moment, God in His goodness, somehow swept into my dreaded imaginations and removed me from them.  And like a fly on the wall, I could see myself!  I could see the upsurdity of it all.  NOTHING had been gained!  All joy had been sucked from my life and I was left alone, trying to figure out how I would make life work, IF my fears were ever realized.  What an embarassment it is to look back on that scene and have a sobering reminder of what my heart looks like when I choose to imagine life devoid of God's grace.  Once again, I had forgotten that "God does not supply grace for our imagination".  Would I choose a life of joy today and trust Him with the grace I need for all the "IF"s of tomorrow?

In the past few years, some of my greatest fears have actually become a reality.  I would be lying if I said it had been easy.  It has been, in fact, HARD!  Tears of great sorrow have been shed and at times I literally groan for the restoration only God can bring.  And yet I sense God nearer than ever before!  I am filled with unexplainable JOY!

How surprising that, in the midst of it all, God laid the adoption of Rachel on our hearts.  Would we willingly choose to look our fears in the face and bring home a dying child from China, with absolutely no guarantee of a "happy" ending?  And now, a whole year later, we are still praying and wondering if God will bring a new heart in time to save our Rachel or if He will be more glorified in taking her home instead?  I don't have the answers to any of my questions yet. But every day is a sweet gift and in the midst of overwhelming joy, I don't have a desperate need to know what lies ahead anymore.  I am simply a woman completely convinced that God's grace is fully sufficient for me and will be supplied exactly when I need it!  And since God does not supply grace for my imagination, I make a choice daily to not go there.  Why would I want to allow the enemy to steal joy from today through my fears of tomorrow? God will already be there when and IF I arrive!  If I carry tomorrow's burden of pain today, will it make the burden lighter tomorrow?  Obviously not!  But Christ will be there tomorrow to help me carry it!  So, for today....  I will choose JOY instead!

The gift of a year! Remembering that blessed day today...

We Gotcha Sweet Rachel!

I'm not sure there's words for the "moments" of today!  Only that God does so much immeasurably more than I've EVER imagined before, and I'm embarrassed that my faith is so weak.  He's proven Himself faithful time and time again, and TODAY immeasurably more faithful than I've ever known Him before!  We saw Rachel the moment we got off the elevator at the civil affairs building.  She was sitting in an office waiting.  She was wearing the outfit I'd sent for her birthday... and she looked oh, so precious!  It seemed as though she recognized us and began peeking over the back of the chair, waving.  I snuck a little candy to her before we were ushered down the hall for I don't know how many more pieces of paperwork before they would formally introduce us to her.  How many times do I have to tell the very same people my name, my birthdate, my address, the embarrassing fact that I am "only" a high-school graduate and a "home maker"????  Geezy, Wheezy!  Just bring me that little girl of mine!

FINALLY she was brought into the room and ushered straight into our hearts and her forever family!  I could try to describe what took place inside that crowded conference room, but there is no language known to man that could do it "justice"!  I am shocked and saddened that this precious little girl could have been left alone for so long... could have struggled with a broken heart without a Mommy and Daddy to care... to hold her... to tuck her in at night... It is suddenly so clear why throughout scripture the Lord says that His heart beats passionately for such as these.  Rachel is precious... oh, SO precious!  She is trusting and loving, and her giggle makes time stand still!  Every time she catches your eye, the edges of her mouth curl at the ends as if she is holding back a smile.  Oh my... I could go on all night, but all you really want is the photos... I know!  I've been on the "reading" end of so many blogs dreaming of today!  Hang in there Mama's!  Days like today make every heart ache, every piece of paperwork, every delay, every dime you've spent... worth it ALL!  God is still in the miracle making business!... I know... because I witnessed one TODAY!  :-)

Tonight, at the close of this dreamy day, Doug picked up Rachel out of her little bed, tucked in between Kate and Ellie, because he couldn't bear putting her to sleep without rocking and holding her first...  She nestled onto his shoulder, stroked his face, and hands, and had the sweetest look of peace and utter delight on her face.  When I leaned over to say goodnight, she took my face and pulled me close... smiled that priceless little smile and hugged me as if she might never let go...  Oh Lord,  it boggles my mind that you would trust me with such a treasure... May I be found faithful in tending your precious, little flock!

Oh, the difference a year makes!  So many miracles.....  Still can't believe she's mine!

One Year Ago Today... Gotcha Eve

The moment we've all been waiting for...

...is almost at hand!  It's the "almost" part that is almost killing me!  And that illusive...long dreamed for...spent thousands for (sounds like a wedding, doesn't it)...lost sleep for... magical "moment" seems to be near killing this 40 something year old body tonight.  We have the clothes chosen and laid out for the entire family.  We must look good!... After all, this "moment" will be forever memorialized through photos and video clips.  You simply can't get THIS one wrong!  The camera is packed and ready to go, along with an extra battery... just in case.  The video camera has been charged and checked over.  The 7 year old videographer has received in depth training in the "Flip"s use.  More importantly, the 8 year old photographer for tomorrows most important occasion has been brushed up as best she can on photo taking of life's most important events.... I've decided that should this not go well.... my now 7 and 8 year olds just might need therapy!  Such pressure to perform could nearly ruin an otherwise emotionally happy child!  :-)  Paperwork- Check;  Passports- Check;  Camera- Check;  Video camera- Check;  A good nights sleep tonight - I don't think so!!!

And with all the preparations of the past several months and now the final moments of count down to Rachel for this special "moment"... The truth is that it is just that... a moment!  A beautiful one, but a "moment" none the less.  In the end, it is all the moments following the big "moment" that God will use to weave His beautiful redemption story in the life of a little girl named Rachel Hope.  But tomorrow morning's "moment" is the first moment of many more to come-  the moment when a little girl named Zhao Chun Piao is no longer an orphan but a beloved daughter-  the moment when her mommy whispers "I love you" in her ear and she understands that she doesn't have to make life work alone anymore-  the moment when her daddy spins her around the room like a princess and she realizes that some fairy tales really do come true-  and the moment when, for the first time in her young life she hears the name of Jesus and finally understands what it really means to be loved!  Yes... it's just a moment... but it's a really important one and I honestly can't believe that it is one the Lord has allowed this Mommy to be a part of...  Thank you Lord Jesus!  It is, and will forever be, one of the greatest privileges of my life!  May your heart for the orphans shine brightly through me in this MOMENT!

"What does HOPE mean, Mommy?"

It never crossed my mind that she might not know! Duh! Only 10 months into the English language, and somehow I expected she automatically understood this concept that shapes my entire existence... and hers!  We'd been through the whole Make A Wish - "What does WISH mean?" thing, but I was completely unprepared for this one!  How do I explain real, lasting HOPE to my dying 8 year old daughter in words she can understand?  It's so much a part of who she is!  Her name ~ Rachel HOPE and her website ~ HOPEforRachel!  It's on Tshirts and bracelets and decorations throughout our home ~

   H O P E

I fumbled around for an answer while 6 little eyeballs stared at me from across the dinner table.  "Well",  I started, "It's not like "hoping" for an ITouch for your birthday, or even "hoping" for a mommy and daddy of your own.  Because even if you never get that ITouch or, heaven forbid, you never get a mommy and daddy, HOPE is still alive!  It's not what we're hoping for... It's who we're hoping in... Our HOPE is in Jesus!"   "So..." I asked Rachel, "If God doesn't send a new heart and decides to take you to heaven instead, is there still hope???"  I could see the wheels turning in that little mind of hers, so wanting to please me with a brilliant answer.  "No???" she answered timidly, sounding convinced she was probably wrong!  Thanks be to Jesus, she was wrong!  Kate piped up from across the table... "Yes!  Of course!  Because even if He takes you to heaven, we'll see you when we get there!"  Ahhhh!  Now we're on to something!

Hebrews 11:1 ~ Now faith is the assurance of things HOPED for, the conviction of things not seen.

I spent a full 24 hours chewing on the matter and doing a gut check on myself!  Where is my HOPE?  A sweet friend died this week following a full rejection of the heart transplant she received just a few months ago.  The memorial service is today.  Is hope still alive for her and her grieving mother?  And what if God decides to take our Rachel home too?  What then?  Will I feel the urge to dismantle my home from the many displays bearing any reminder of hope and silently declare that all my hopes have been dashed?

Hebrews 6:19 ~  We have this HOPE as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.

I admit it... I do "hope" that God's plan includes many more years with our precious Rachel.  I "hope" that His healing miracles abound in the coming months.  For that matter, I really "hope" that His plan is not to take any of my other children home before me either!  And while we're at it, let's add my husband to that list too!  I, like you, have many hopes and dreams for myself and for my kids.... But that's not the kind of hope we're talking about at all!  How grateful I am that my true HOPE is not pinned on circumstances that are unpredictable and ever changing or resting upon fallible human beings.  We are promised in the Bible that as believers we WILL have troubles, but we should not lose HOPE, because Jesus has overcome the world!  Our hopes do not rest in the here and now.  Our hopes rest on something far greater!

Psalm 119:49-50 ~ Remember your word to your servant, for you have given me HOPE.  My comfort in my suffering is this:  Your promise preserves my life.

Jesus Christ is our living HOPE!  Because of this reality, the apostle Paul told grieving believers to "not grieve as others do who have no hope".  If we lose Rachel tomorrow, you can bet we will grieve... deeply!  Our home would never be the same again, after having her sweet, joyful spirit here
for nearly a year now!  And the more I fall in love with her, the more I realize how great the pain would be in losing her.  But we didn't bring Rachel home with any promises attached.  We didn't even bring her home based upon any hope of a medical miracle for her broken heart, though we would be thrilled if God's plan included that!  We brought Rachel home because we wanted her to know Jesus.  We wanted her to know true HOPE, found only in a sweet relationship with Him!  We've never promised her that we could fix her heart.  Nor have we ever promised her a new one.  But we have promised her that God has not forgotten her... that He loves her... and that He will never leave her.  Doug and I believe whole heartedly (pun intended) that God has preserved her life for a reason!  He's brought her to a home where she is deeply loved and daily taught the love of Jesus.  He's brought her here so that we could answer the life-altering question she asked last night... "What does HOPE mean, Mommy?"

Psalm 130:7 ~ HOPE in the Lord,  for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption.

The world's idea of hope is "to wish for, to expect, but without certainty of the fulfilment; to desire very much, but with no real assurance of getting your desire".  But the biblical usage of hope is an indication of certainty!  HOPE, in scripture, means "a strong and confident expectation"!  God's Word is full of promises for us, as His children, that we can find great HOPE in,... and stake our very lives on!

Romans 15:13 ~ May the God of HOPE fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in HOPE.

I want my children, and most especially Rachel, to know that our hope is not fixed on a healthy heart arriving in time...  God's plans may not be our own.  But we can have "a strong and confident expectation" that whatever His plans are, they are GOOD and filled with promises that give us great HOPE!

Psalm 146:5 ~ How blessed is he whose HOPE is in the Lord his God.

No regrets...

The family I'm praying for tonight has no idea there is a storm brewing over the horizon.  A storm so violent, life will never be the same for them again!  They will lose one of their most prized possessions...... their child.     (If I were speaking to an audience right now, that statement would be followed by an eternally long pause...............)

How do I pray for a family like that?  I almost feel as if I have some inside information on their lives that even they are not aware of today.  They will go to bed tonight and probably not even think about the terrible possibilities that lie ahead.  Who knows what will happen tomorrow, as they go about their day?  Their child will likely disobey, talk back, whine, or have a stinky attitude that needs to be addressed.  There will be sibling rivalry, fighting, and disputes over who gets to ride up front or get their turn next.  Will Dad lose his temper and escape to the golf course?  Will Mom utter things she swore she'd never say?  Maybe.

But mothering a dying child brings a new perspective to everything!  I still lose my cool and say things I wish I could take back.  I still wonder what in the world I was thinking when I brought home three little girls ~ all the exact same age!  But suddenly, in light of the reality looming on my own horizon, I am compelled to live a life of no regrets!

When we brought Rachel home from China, we simply didn't know how long we had...  We decided ahead of time that what we could not change in quantity, we would make up for in quality!  More than anything, we wanted Rachel to know the love of a family... to know that she had a mommy and daddy committed to walking through the dark days with her... and above everything, we wanted Rachel to know that the love of Jesus was with her, no matter what!

The reality is that parenting a house full of children demands a lot discipline.  Rachel had much to learn in order to "unlearn" some of the terrible habits formed inside the walls of an orphanage for 7 years, not to mention the many things she must learn for the very first time.  Living within a family unit requires a lot of work, even when learning begins at birth.  We have a lot of catching up to do!  Our home is certainly not all hugs, kisses, and chocolates, and I've yet to be nominated into the "Parenting Hall of Fame",  but our home feels so much different than ever before through the lense of a new perspective.  When you are committed to living a life of no regrets, you make different choices all together!  You choose to see life differently and to live it differently!  If that heart never comes and we end up losing our Rachel, I want to remember this time for what it was.... precious!  I want to embrace every precious moment and look back with no regrets!

Rachel's critical needs remind me how fragile life is.... for all of us!  We could be the family I wrote about at the beginning of this post- living life completely oblivious to all that lies ahead for myself or for the people I love so much.  I have not been promised any special immunity to loss!  I am humbled that as I pray for the healing of my own child through a new heart, I will only receive it through another's indescribable loss.  And I wonder.... why should God give life to my child and yet take life from another?  (It's hard to swallow after typing that!)  Kate has offered her own heart for Rachel several times!  I tell her that is "unacceptable".... absolutely not!!!  But is it more acceptable only when it happens to someone else???  This subject makes me terribly uncomfortable, but it haunts me every time my thoughts turn toward the "new" heart we pray for so many times a day!

Tonight, as I pray for a new heart for Rachel, I am strangely not in such a hurry anymore.  God has been so merciful and has kept Rachel strong while she waits...  "No hurry, God!,"  I whisper, "Thanks seems enough for the sweet summer we've shared and for the joy that fills our home, simply because Rachel is in it!  Let the parents that will soon face the fate none of us want, enjoy this summer with their child too!  Fill their home with laughter and sweet memories, so that when the impending storm blows through, they will look back with no regrets!  And if your plan is to take Rachel "home" instead, Lord, help us to embrace each moment you choose to give, so that our lives will be filled with love and... no regrets!  Amen."

God is for us!

"Real freedom is being free of fear!"

Those who know me well would probably describe me as "real".  I hope so!  I've never been good at pretending.  Nor have I ever been accused of holding back personal opinions, of which there are many! If I am thinking something, it will likely come out of my mouth, long before I've had time to think about  the wisdom in holding my tongue or keeping said opinions to myself!  The old saying- "What you see is what you get" must have been coined by someone just after meeting me!  :-)

So on that note, I'll just be honest!...   This has likely been the hardest year of my life.  I'd like to believe that another year like this one will never darken my horizon again, but I'm learning with age that life is lived in seasons.... ever changing, but predictable.  It would be foolish of me to sell my "winter clothes", thinking I won't face another blustery, cold season like this one again.  But I'll admit that I am enjoying the spring flowers blooming in my heart these days and this season seems especially wonderful after the suffering of such a long winter!  I feel such unexplainable joy!  And I feel a sense of freedom that I have never known before!  How, I've wondered, is that possible when the past year has included more tears than all of the previous years put together; when even today the ground beneath us is beginning to quake; and the future with Rachel holds absolutely no guarantees of a happy ending?

In reading this, you'd likely never guess that as I type, I have my cell phone nearby... For almost 5 months now, it has never left my side!  I'm waiting for a phone call to finally bring news that a heart has been donated that will ultimately save the life of my precious daughter Rachel.  Because my days are filled with her sweet, happy spirit, it is easy for me to be lulled into believing that she is perfectly "fine"... not living on borrowed time- each day- each breath a miracle!  But lest you think I am living with my head stuck firmly in the sand, I can assure you that I have never been more keenly aware of how incredibly fragile life is... for Rachel, of course, but for each and every one of us too!  The sweet joy I'm feeling these days can only be explained by the overwhelming grace I have found in my relationship with Christ and the sweet realization that with Him, I have nothing to fear!  "If God is for us, who can be against us?"  How sweet to know that God is for us!

In taking a deep look inside my own heart, I am discovering that the benefits of such a long winter season of the soul is a wonderful new freedom from fear that I have not known before.  I didn't even know that I was afraid!  But a careful, introspective inventory revealed some life-long fears that it was high time I stood "toe to toe" with.  There are simply some things in my life that I hold onto with a tight grip.  My kids would top the list... just below them is my husband... then the secure home we've built, filled with treasures I've accumulated over the years.  God seems to be in the business of prying my fingers, one by one, off of those special treasures these days!

God has allowed me to realize some of my deepest fears over the past year.  In some ways, their realization was even worse than I expected.  And during the darkest days, if I would have had the power to do something to change my circumstances, you can bet I would have!!!   But God was doing a work in my heart that would likely not have occurred any other way.  Now that the tears have dried, and my vision is clearer, I can see how faithfully the Lord was teaching me about Himself.  I had spent many years speaking around the country about the sufficiency of Christ.  My mantra became "God + Nothing = Everything".  Tonight as I type this post, I am more fully convinced of that truth than ever before.  And suddenly I realize that I have nothing to fear anymore.  I am free!  God has proven to be the faithful God I've always heard about, but now truly KNOW!  "If God is for us, who can be against us?"  If I've learned anything through facing my fears, it is this... God is for us!!!

A cold wind swept through our home again last week.  Doug was notified that the church where he has been working part time for the past year has decided to "let him go".  We have just months to find another job to provide 65% of our income and the medical insurance that has covered Rachel's care since coming home from China last September.  And yet, I am not afraid!  I refuse to worry about something so much bigger than I can handle!  I will choose to trust God instead.  "But if God is for us, who can be against us?"  If I've learned anything through the losses of this year, it is this... God is for us!

Rachel did not come to us with any promises attached.  We have been asked more times than I can count if we "knew what we were getting into" with Rachel's adoption.  Yes... we knew!  But with God's help we stared fear in the face and did it anyway!  The sheer joy and love for life she has brought into our home in spite of her horrendous beginnings are nothing short of miraculous!  Fear could have stolen this precious treasure without us even knowing what we'd missed!  And even today, my fears could literally taunt me, if I let them!  Will a heart arrive in time or will you have to face the loss of another child?  But I refuse to worry about something so much bigger than I can handle!  I will choose to trust God instead.  "But if God is for us, who can be against us?"  If I've learned anything through the adoption of Rachel, it is this... God is for us!

I am certain about one thing!  Nothing in life is certain!  But I refuse to worry about things I can certainly not handle!  I will choose to trust God instead.  "If God is for us, who can be against us?"  There are just no "if"s about it!...  God is for us!!!

"Whom have I in heaven but you?  And on earth there is nothing I desire beside you?  My heart and my flesh may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever!" Psalm 73

Happy Birthday Rachel!

8 miraculous years!  I wish I could somehow reach across the miles and whisper the miraculous news into her birth mother's ears... surely she would be stunned by such news!  When she left her at that bus stop a little more than 7 years ago, she must have believed that her life was hanging in the balance even then...  It was!  But God's healing hand covered her little life and she survived.  Even when the doctors proclaimed her to be "terminal" and sent her to the orphanage to die, she continued to cling to life.  And today... she is so full of life that no one that saw her tonight as she celebrated her 8th birthday would have believed that her future still hangs in the balance.  Her love for life~ her relentless hope~ her contagious smile, are beyond explanation!  I call that a miracle and I am grateful beyond words that God has allowed me to enjoy a front row seat for all He is doing in and through her young life!  It has been a difficult road and many twists and turns still lie ahead.  And though I have no assurance that this journey will end in the way I am hoping, I'd do it again... a million times over!

Rachel has looked forward to this day since she came home from China last September!  I was able to send a package to her last year for her birthday.  It included news that she had a family... complete with photos of all of us anxiously awaiting her homecoming!  She says that she was happy- she had longed to be chosen for so long!  So happy, that she claims she had a hard time sleeping every night after that special day, because she was so excited that we might arrive to take her home "tomorrow".  Sadly, it would be almost 3 months before that "tomorrow" would finally come!  Thankfully, that birthday would be the last she would spend alone!  Today, her 8th birthday was filled with a family that adores her and a great hope that a new heart might bring with it, the chance to celebrate many, many more years of birthday celebrations with the people that love her so much!

We begin this new year waiting for the phone to ring with the news that the heart we are hoping for has finally arrived!  As each day of waiting turns into weeks, and then into months, I wonder how much longer Rachel can hold on...  Many have tried to encourage me by claiming that the last 8 years filled with such miracles are a guarantee that God's plans include a long life ahead for Rachel.  My hope does not rest in any such "guarantee".  My hope rests in knowing that God loves Rachel.  He has an incredible plan for her life!  This is an amazing, miraculous truth whether that plan includes many happy birthdays in the years ahead, or if that plan ordains this to be her last.  Only His grace could explain the absolute peace I feel deep inside even typing such things...  But I know that if He takes her "home" tomorrow, her life will have had unmistakable meaning and eternal purpose!  My own life has been touched and blessed immeasurably by this precious little orphaned girl who knew nothing of HOPE or HOME.  And through her, God has taught me the true meaning of both!!  Happy Birthday to you, precious Rachel!  You are so very loved!... today and always!

I have to include this one!... When people around our table witnessed the pure delight on Rachel's face at the singing of "Happy Birthday", many began pulling out their wallets and calling Rachel to their table to give her some birthday cash!  She walked out of Outback Steakhouse with $27.00 in her hands and the biggest smile you can imagine across her face!  It astounds me how many people are so moved just by watching Rachel find such joy in the things most of us take completely for granted!
