JOY has come!...

As I sit here and type in the early, early hours of Christmas morning, tunes from my favorite Christmas carols roll around in my head.   I've sang most of them since before I can even remember... and yet, strangely, the words are suddenly new and filled with meaning...

"Joy to the world...

the LORD is come!
Let earth receive her KING!
Let every HEART, Prepare HIM room..."

Did you catch that?  The Lord came and brought JOY with Him!  But in order to know that joy, we must make room in our hearts for Him to reign as Lord and King!  What a wonderful time Christmas is to do that!... Make room for Him.  So often my heart is crowded by too many other things to "make room" for Him.  Sadly, I might have more in common with the innkeeper than I'd like to admit...  "Sorry God, my heart is full!  But maybe you could find some room out back!"  In fairness to the innkeeper-  He had no idea who he was turning away that night!  But most of us do!!!  Forgive me, Lord.  Change my heart so that there is always room enough for YOU!  I can already feel it overflowing with JOY!  Joy to the world... the LORD is come!

Oh, come let us adore Him!
Oh, come let us adore Him!
Oh, come let us adore Him... Christ the Lord!

Our Christmas tree was filled with my favorite things this year!

Yes... those are sharks teeth on our Christmas tree!

Can you see it?  We even have sea glass garland on the tree!!!
...and sand, of course!

I think it was my favorite tree ever!!!... and the Christmas boxes never left my garage!  We just have to return my favorite things to their rightful places and drag the tree out the back door!  Wa La!
                 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh, Holy night, the stars are brightly shining.  It is the night of our dear Saviors birth.  Long lay the world in sin and error pining, 'til He appeared and the soul felt it's worth.  A thrill of HOPE, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.  Fall on your knees!  Oh, hear the angel's voices.  Oh night divine.  Oh, night, when Christ was born.  Oh, night divine!  Oh, night... Oh, Holy night!
Rachel was honored to not only dance,
but to be a beneficiary of The Nutcracker performance this year!
In the midst of the holiday chaos, I'm afraid that the HOPE Christ brought through His birth and ultimate death are nearly forgotten.  And if that's true... there's little need for celebration!  But if it's really true that Jesus was indeed the promised Savior, it is past time we join the shepherds and wise men on our knees before Him!  Have I been so struck this season, by the overwhelming knowledge that Jesus came for my weary, pining heart that the only fitting response is to fall on my knees and worship?  For the sake of truthfulness and authenticity, I will have to admit that I have not.... no, not once.  But fall on my knees I shall do!  Because He is so incredibly, immeasurably WORTH my absolute knee-bowing honor and praise!...
Emmanuel!  Emmanuel!
Wonderful Counselor,
Lord of Life, Lord of all;
He is the Prince of Peace,
Mighty God,
Holy One,....
Emmanuel!  Emmanuel!
 Emmanuel ~ "God with us"  We're talking about the God of the universe choosing to come and live among us.  And who is this God that wants to be with you and me?  He's a wonderful counselor.  He's the Lord of LIFE!  He's Lord of ALL!  He reigns over PEACE!  He is mighty and holy!  ALL of THAT living here with us!  If that doesn't lead you to fall to your knees in adoration, I suppose nothing can....  But if I'm learning anything along the path of parenting a critically ill child, it is this~ Time for LIVING is short!  Far too short to waste it with good intentions, or with putting off until tomorrow, (or next Christmas), what needs to be done TODAY!  Won't you join my family as each of us falls to our knees in absolute adoration and proclaims Jesus Christ to be the Lord He is?!?!
Here are a few of our favorite family photos from our very cold and windy "set"!  For some reason every time it's picture day, the wind gets the memo and starts stirring up trouble!  Go figure!  Either way- it was a fun filled hour of capturing this precious time in the life of our family!
We covet your prayers for our family as we learn to love, honor, and adore the Lord Jesus
in the ways He is most deserving of!
A Reunion with God...
I had one today!  I didn't even know He had something special planned for the day!  I was just walking along the beach enjoying a "regular" day with Him, when I looked down and noticed a beautiful, white feather near the edge of the water.  Memories flooded back to another day many years ago when I'd found a white feather much like this one!
And then I remembered!  How could I have forgotten?  Exactly 9 years ago today, on this very beach, God met me and invited me to join Him on a miraculous journey.  I packed up the white feather He'd left just for me and I headed off into the unknown...
"Now to Him who is able to do IMMEASURABLY MORE than all we ask or imagine.  To Him be the Glory!"
December 18, 2003 ~    The Dream Giver...
     My body was in Florida celebrating 20 years of marriage... My heart was in China.  I could think of little else.  My mind was in full-out war with itself.  One moment I was certain - the next - terrified!!!
     Doug and I knelt next to our hotel bed and begged God for direction.  For Doug, the whole process was pretty cut and dried.  You feel led to do something - go do it!  Not me!!!  I was on an emotional roller coaster.  Couples celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary  aren't usually contemplating starting a family--- again!  Nothing could cure my restless heart like a good long walk on the beach with the Lord.  I grabbed my Ipod and headed out the door.  I set my Ipod on one song and hit repeat again and again for the entire walk!  The words of that song expressed the words of my heart... a prayer I couldn't have spoken better myself!
     "I'm finding myself at a loss for words, and the funny thing is, it's OK.  The last thing I need is to be heard, but to hear what you would say.  Word of God speak.  Would you pour down like rain?  Washing my eyes to see your majesty.  To be still and know that you're in this place.  Please let me stay and rest in your holiness.  Word of God speak!"
     "I'm finding myself in the midst of you, beyond the music, beyond the noise.  All that I need, is to be with you, and in the quiet, hear your voice.  Word of God speak.  Would you pour down like rain?  Washing my eyes to see your majesty.  To be still and know that you're in this place.  Please let me stay and rest in your holiness.  Word of God speak.  Would you pour down like rain?  Washing my eyes to see your majesty.  To be still and know that you're in this place.  Please let me stay and rest in your holiness."
     "I'm finding myself at a loss for words, and the funny thing is, it's OK."
     It was a cold, winter day, so I had the beach to myself.  I raised my hands in prayer to the Lord... I cried... I begged God to come near!  As I walked along, praying, I noticed a beautiful white feather near the edge of the water.  I had always collected shells and shark's teeth along the ocean, but I'd never seen a feather like this one before.  I picked it up and noticed it's end was shaped like the perfect quill.  "Lord," I prayed, "take this feather and write your will on the tablet of my heart.  I don't want to fight anymore... or weigh the cost... or worry about what's good for me...  I simply want to obey!  Help me to follow wherever that may lead!"
     I decided to take my beautiful feather home to remember my time with the Lord.  I rinsed it and packed in in my suitcase for the flight home the next day.  Later that night, while spending some time with a close friend who knew of my "dreams", she introduced me to a book entitled  "The Dream Giver" by Bruce Wilkinson.  I picked up a copy on our way back to the hotel and tucked it into my carry-on bag for the long flight home.
     We had barely taken off when I grabbed the book and started to read about a Nobody named "Ordinary" (because... well, he was ordinary).  He lived in the Land of Familiar with all of the other Nobodies.  Ordinary had big dreams... but Nobodies in the Land of Familiar didn't do big things!  One morning, however, Ordinary discovered a long white feather resting on the sill of his window.  The Dream Giver had left it there just for him and beckoned him to follow his dream!
     There, packed in my suitcase, was my own beautiful white feather!!!...left by my Dream Giver to bid me to follow!  I sobbed like a baby that God would indeed "speak" to me in such a personal way!  Before we even landed in Houston I knew that I would indeed follow my God-given dreams to China!  Little did I know then, what a beautiful tapestry of redemption God had begun to weave in my life!
One year later ~
 I returned to this special place with my dream come true!
18 months later ~
Doug and I returned... with a baby in tow!
              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A sweet reunion with God- 9 years later!  And you, my friends, know the rest of the story!  How could I have even imagined then that not only one, but three precious girls were to be mine through following The Dream Giver...  that I would leave the beach today and hurry to meet my three daughters as they got off the bus at our home less than 3 blocks away...  and that 9 years later, I would thank God with everything in me that fear did not keep me from one of the most miraculous journeys of my lifetime?  What an unchanging, faithful, awe-inspiring God we serve!

I'm headed out to the beach again tomorrow to look for another beautiful, white feather left by The Dream Giver Himself...   You should come along!  Maybe He'll leave one for you too!

A new beginning...

December 10, 1983

Yesterday Doug and I celebrated 29 years of marriage!   That means a lot of things, including more than our share of ups and downs, and bumps and bruises along the way.  But mostly it means that 29 years are now a part of our history together!  And today?      ...A new beginning!

If 29 years has proven anything, it has proven that marriage is hard!  Especially when you start at the ripe young age of 18 and 22 (well... I did turn 19 just 9 days later!)  There's little Doug and I haven't learned together!  And while growing up this way made it harder than usual at times, I wouldn't trade it for the world!  Almost our entire histories... TOGETHER!

And the best part?  We are still deeply in love!  Doug is my best friend... the person I'd rather spend my days with than anyone else on the planet!  I have a plaque that has been hanging in our home since the very beginning and last night when I opened the note from Doug, attached to my beautiful roses, I found those words there...  "Happiness is being married to your best friend!"  How wonderfully, miraculously true!  I wondered as I just typed that word if I was overstating the "miracle" of our relationship, but I instantly decided that I was not!  To still "feel" very much in love and committed as best friends after the 29 years we just traveled?  A miracle indeed!

It took me a long time to figure out the secret to the special relationship we share, because neither of us have proven to be Mr or Mrs "Right"!  Far from it!  In fact, I'm certain we've both done far more wrong than right!  And were our love dependent on some measure of perfection from either of us, it would have been over a long time ago!  Last night I posted a picture of the beautiful flowers Doug gave me in celebration of our 29 years in front of these words...

                  Kiss Laugh & Dream

We've done our fair share of all three and they are an everyday part of our special friendship.  But more important than any of those things combined is the foundation of Jesus.  That sounds like the biggest wedding cliche' of all time!  But with Jesus at the center of it all, there lies a foundation of love and forgiveness that wouldn't be possible without Him.

My oldest sister is a college professor and recently obtained her Doctorate of Philosophy in Communication.  In the process, she published some research that she had done on the subject of "Forgiveness".  She found and interviewed at length several couples that had married, divorced, and then ultimately ended up remarrying one another.  The premise is obvious.  What could possibly make two people, that had ended a once hope-filled marriage now filled with irreconcilable differences, return to one another with the hopes of a different outcome??  The only answer is forgiveness!  Somewhere along the way, these men and women decided to forgive one another and begin again!

Therein lies the elusive secret to a happy marriage!  Two very broken people.... capable of hurting one another more than anyone else, (and often doing so)...  deciding to forgive one another and begin again!  But this doesn't just apply to the once-married couple as they recite their vows for the second time.  This applies to every couple,... every moment,... every day,... every month,... every year that they are wed!

Doug and I are happily married today because somewhere along the way we learned how to forgive one another for being human.  We went to sleep last night forgiving the hurts of the day and woke this morning to a new beginning.  Tonight we will do the same and tomorrow?  A new beginning, of course!!!

Please don't misunderstand!  There are, for certain, plenty of wounds afflicted upon many of us by our spouses that require a very long and painful journey toward forgiveness and often do not end with the reconciliation and restoration of the relationship we longed for.  These circumstances are obviously not the ones I am referring to in this context.  Let's face it, though... many of the things that drive us to the brink of marital insanity are the petty, non-consequential, daily irritants, and selfishness inherent in all human flesh...  We must live with this broken man and he with an equally broken woman and learn that the answer to a happy existence will come, in spite of ourselves, as we each take responsibility to forgive the grievances of the day, before they pile up to an uncontrollable mess.

If you've been hanging around my blog for long, you likely know that I have a deep, deep love for the beach.... Well, not just the beach... but the treasures the beach washes ashore with every new, crashing wave.  God, in His absolute, personal love for me, picked out the home we were renting, and now have finally bought.  It is old.  It is quirky.  It is small. (way too small for a family of 8!)  But it is less than 3 blocks from some of the most beautiful beaches in America and when your toes sink into that warm Florida sand, you suddenly remember why old, quirky, and very small doesn't matter at all!!!

All of these treasures a gift straight from the Lord's hands!
There is simply little else I'd rather do than spend hour, upon hour, upon hour searching the shoreline for treasures.  I look at them as sweet treasures straight from the hands of the Lord to me!  And with such an endless supply at God's hands, this will be a pleasure I can enjoy for an entire lifetime!  How incredible is that???  There are tricks to this trade, though, that you learn as you hown your beach-combing skills.  Certain treasures (like conch shells) are commonly found during the winter months and delivered into your hands from crashing waves on a windy day.  Shark's teeth hunting demands a different kind of day all together.  Waves, with not too much wind, produce the most teeth for a happy hunt. And low tide has a way of exposing treasures you won't see the rest of the day!  All of these variables can make a relentless beach treasure comber crazy!!!

One day a friend texted from the beach and said it was loaded with shark's teeth!  We couldn't get there fast enough!  What if too many other fanatics beat us there and found them all before we even arrived?  Hurry!  We've got to get out there and start filling our pockets!

Little did I know that on that day I would meet an old, sage, beach-hunter, who would put it all in perspective for me and give me eyes to see some truths I had somehow missed before!  She had a long-handled sifting spoon for grabbing her treasures as they came in with the tide.  Because the very first thing you must learn when looking for treasures in the ocean is that the beach is ever- changing!  Right before your eyes, with each crashing wave, the old is swept away, and a new beach is left with fresh treasures to be seized upon!  Only to be interrupted by yet another crashing wave, and beautiful new treasures... "With every wave... a brand new beach!" she'd say again and again, as she captured the prettiest treasures I'd seen, just seconds before they would have been snatched back into the sea and replaced with a different prize all together!

What a beautiful principle to apply to our lives and to our marriages!  I need not rush to the beach as if all the best treasures will be taken by the time I arrive...  Because with every crash of a new ocean wave, God is fashioning a brand new beach with unlimited treasures to be found!  This is a beautiful picture of how God has dealt so mercifully and graciously with me in spite of my sin and selfishness.... When I come to Him in my brokeness, each new wave crashes over what has been done and it is swept away into the past, revealing all that is new, along with the many beautiful treasures He has left for me to discover. A new beginning..  What will happen in between the crashing of one wave and the next?  I don't know.  But whatever it is- good or bad- it will be swept away with the next wave and I will begin with a new beach again...

As I watch God's hands move the ocean tides and constantly change the sandy shores, I get a profound and beautiful picture of the Gospel!  Through Christ, and Him alone, new beginnings are possible.  And with each new beginning, following each new failure, blessings are washed ashore to remind me that He will be there to begin again... and again... and again.  Day by day.  Moment by moment.  The forgiveness that Christ' death applies to our brokeness is just like the waves... predictable... constant... washing away the broken past, and beginning again!

I remember hearing a sermon a few years ago... "God never grows tired of new beginnings."  Sometimes this is hard for me to believe... really?  He's not fed up with me yet?  My walk on the beach gives me tangible proof that this is true!  How blessed we are to serve a God that washes the past away countless times and then, as always, provides all that is new... even filling it with the best of His treasures for us to delight in!

So, it is true in marriage more than in any other relationship of the human kind...  A breach of trust, selfishness, unkind words...  The wave crashes in, sweeping away the old, and a new beach is revealed with waiting treasures.  This cycle of forgiveness goes on and on like the tides of the mighty sea.
Broken - Forgiven - Begin again....  Broken - Forgiven - Begin again...    If I walk away from my marriage tomorrow because I can not forgive, what treasures will I miss from the new beach my forgiveness would have provided?

Forgiveness is most obviously the answer to our broken marriages!  We are most blessed when we, with our spouses, can take on the mantle of Christ in His pattern of forgiveness and apply it to our marriage relationship.  Many have chosen not to, thinking that maybe a better relationship could be forged with a different broken human.  But they have been sorely disappointed to discover that their new Mr Right needs forgiveness as much as the one before him.  Thus the cycle of forgiveness and new beginnings must begin again.  Only the name has changed, as the human condition certainly won't this side of heaven!  Forgive- Begin again- Forgive- Begin again...

When I came out of my bedroom last night, ready for an Anniversary date night with Doug, the flowers I've come to expect every year were on the table.  Stunning!  29 Roses ~11 red roses and 18 white roses!  Next year, Lord willing, there will be another white rose!  This special, most personal tradition was begun 18 years ago when I received my first of many white roses, from a very broken-hearted husband requesting "a new beginning".  He asked that we renew our vows to signify our new beginning and we did!  In that moment, 11 very broken years... were washed away.  And along the shores of our hearts... a new beginning was revealed with immeasurable treasures!

Even now... especially now... after 29 years... Today is a new day!  To love; to forgive; to start over! Today ~ a new beginning!

29 years later!

Still so in love with you... after all these years!

A Christmas "Do-Over"...

I'm asking God for a "Do-Over" on Christmas... or at least Christmas the way we've always celebrated it!  My Phase 2 kids from China are perfect proof that God loves "Do-Overs"!  I dreamed of being a mommy since I was a little girl and never wanted anything more than to stay at home and raise my children to know and love Jesus.  But I started young and before I even reached 30 years old, I already had the three children God would give me biologically.  I was far more selfish, than selfless.  Mothering 24/7 was so much harder than I had imagined and I found myself wishing many of those years away.  I made my fair share of mistakes and often felt like I was an absolute failure at the only "job" I had ever really wanted.  What a surprise it was when God resurfaced my dreams of adoption just as those 3 were off to school and I had regained the freedom I thought I had earned after 11 years of full-time mothering.  Little did I know that God had 3 more waiting for me in China and that this Phase 2 "Do-Over" would be the delight of my life!

Isn't God good to give us second chances?  I will likely re-do some of the mistakes of Phase 1 and most certainly make new ones all together!  But it's in the opportunity to try again that we get to see God's grace on full display!  His grace has been so evident in our home this year!  My deepest desire is to respond by celebrating Him in a whole new Christ-centered way this Christmas.  Could I have a "do-over" on Christmas, Lord?  I'd like to discover what it means to truly delight in the gift of Jesus and spend the season expressing my deep gratitude and love in giving gifts to HIM!

The sad reality is that the world I am surrounded by is in the process of literally removing Christ from Christmas all together!  And while this should not surprise us...., we supposed "Christ-followers" might need to take an honest look at our holiday celebrations and face up to an even sadder reality...  He's nearly missing from ours too!!!  And while these cold, hard facts smack me in the face, I feel a need to defend myself a bit!  I have tried.... I mean, I've really tried!  Simplify, simplify, simplify!  Less spending of money for things none of us need and more spending of time with the people we love.  More meaningful giving and less checks off of Santa's list.  The Nativity Story before a single gift is opened and a birthday cake for Jesus before the day is through...  And maybe I could take the kids shopping to fill a shoebox for a child in need on the other side of the world.  After all, I've got to teach my kids that Christmas is more about giving than receiving.... right????

But if you are at all like me, you might have to admit to a sinking feeling at the end of every Christmas celebration, as we clean up the wrapping paper left from all the gifts we hoped would make the people we love happy, and then notice our children looking beneath the empty tree with disappointment that the gift giving is "over".  Deep down in our guts we know that most Christmases sweep past us and we have largely missed the true meaning of the season all together!

Before you call me "Scrooge" or accuse me of being the Grinch who stole Christmas, let me make something really clear!  I love gifts!  Giving them AND receiving them!  I think God loves the giving of gifts too!  After all, isn't that was Christmas really IS about anyway?  God giving the most beautiful gift of all.... His son... to save us from ourselves!!!  Christmas began with a gift and I have to believe that the spirit of this season is best expressed through the tradition of giving gifts!  The world has rightly joined us in this gift giving, after the tradition of St Nicholas, who secretly gave to the poorest around him.  But this is, precisely, where I think we've gone off the rails as believers in Jesus...

I'm going to nark on my hubby and kids for a minute and tell you a sad, but very true, story....

About 5 years ago, I didn't get a single gift for Christmas!  I had been completely overlooked in the hustle and bustle of the season...  I've tried to go back and remember what was going on that year that caused such a distraction among the people that I love and I am convinced love me too, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it was!  Maybe I didn't notice because I was so feverishly working on a special gift I had planned for each and every one of those same people that year.  It may sound as if I am trying to over-inflate myself here, but when you see what I was doing until all hours of the morning at the local Kinkos, I think you might understand...

Pictured here is what is commonly called a "Blank Bible".  It is actually a Bible taken apart at the seams, layered with blank sheets of paper the same size, hole punched and bound, then placed into beautiful leather covers.  This incredible, VERY time consuming project resulted in a 4 volume set of the Bible intended for profuse note-taking and personal journaling of the owner and designed to be a coveted keepsake to be passed down to loved ones for generations to come.  Yes... I did that!  Six times over- I did that!  A grand total of 24 volumes!  One for my husband, one for my mom, one for each of my three older kids, and then of course, one for myself!   In retrospect, I'm glad I gave that gift to myself, as it would be the only one I'd get that year!   But I'm getting ahead of myself again!...

On Christmas Eve, I was beside myself with delight at presenting this most special gift to Doug and the kids.  I was likely more thrilled in the giving then they were in the receiving, but isn't that always true?    The Bible says that it is "more blessed to give than to receive" and I believe it, but it had never been more true than with this gift in particular.  I'm certain that I would personally give any amount of money to have such a treasure from the generations before me!  Doug was thrilled with his and the kids seemed grateful too.  I knew, though, that this was a gift that they would treasure more and more as they got older and began to have children of their own.

Christmas morning came and was filled with the excitement of the two preschoolers in our home.  It was so much fun to celebrate with little ones around the tree again and I loved every minute of it!  I didn't notice that there wasn't a single gift for me until the tree was almost empty underneath.  I tried to shrug it off and convince myself that it didn't matter.  The joy was in the giving, (remember?) and I had certainly done that!!!  Besides, I figured there must be a surprise gift waiting for me around the next corner and I didn't want to embarrass myself by pointing out this obvious oversight.  It was bedtime and no such gift had appeared.  Maybe it was underneath my pillow... it wasn't.

In fairness to my husband, who just got painted in the most awful light possible, I should tell you that we had agreed to NOT exchange gifts with one another that year.  I had broken the terms of our agreement when I made him a set of Bibles, but was not expecting a gift in return from him on Christmas morning.  Still, I was hurt...  I had spent hour upon hour in making the most special gift I could have imagined for the people I loved so much, but not one of those people thought of me.  I give gifts because I want to express my love, not so that I can receive a gift in return.  But as much as I want to love deeply, I want to BE loved deeply too!  Not one of us wants to feel overlooked or forgotten...

Here's the point to my really long and personal sob story...  Is this not EXACTLY what we have done with Christ in celebrating Christmas?  Surely we do not understand the sacrificial Gift given on our behalf in His birth and, even more importantly,... in His death.  All of that can seem so far away and removed from our daily lives, and yet the God of the universe continues to give... and give... and give good gifts to His children.  Is it not obvious why the Bible says ..."He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all - how will He not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things?"

We serve a God who delights in lavishing His love on us through good and perfect gifts.  But, sadly... even tragically... we are distracted by a world that offers us so little in comparison, and we forget to express our love through gifts to HIM!!      No more!!!  If Christmas really is a birthday celebration for the Savior of the world, than I think it's high time we treat Him to the kind of celebration and gifts He is so deserving of!

I gathered my "littles" around the table to have a talk on the matter....
"What is Christmas, girls?" I asked.  Dutifully they cried out in unison... "Jesus' Birthday!!!"
"Well," I said, "I've been thinking a lot about this lately and I'd like to play a little game with you today... Let's pretend that today is Rachel's birthday instead!"  Rachel began to beam that she had been chosen for this honor!
 "Happy Birthday Rachel!",  I began, "We are so excited it's your day and so thankful that God brought you to our family and has kept your heart strong so that we could celebrate another year with you!" I exchanged over-exuberant hugs with her and over-the-top excitement about "her" day!  She seemed to thoroughly enjoy this "surprise" celebration with all the attention and adulation it brought with it
But then suddenly I became distracted and shifted my attention to the other two children at the table.  "Kate!"  I said.  "I have a gift for you to celebrate Rachel's birthday!  I spent a small fortune on it, but you are going to absolutely LOVE it!!! Open it, open it.... I am so excited!"
I shot a quick glance and waved my hand toward Rachel...  "Oh... Happy Birthday Rachel!"  She seemed suddenly confused...
"And Ellie!",  I continued.  "I bought something wonderful for you too!  I saw it and knew that you just HAD to have it for Rachel's birthday!"  I handed the pretend package across the table toward Ellie.   She smiled big and reached out, as if taking this invisible package from my hands.
Rachel suddenly decided that she didn't like the direction this party was going in!  She looked stunned that all this gift giving was being diverted from her and onto everyone else at the table, when today had rightfully been proclaimed her birthday!  "I'm sorry, Rachel," I said, "but I've spent all my money buying gifts for Kate and Ellie and I couldn't get you anything for your birthday.  I hope you know how much we love you, though!  Happy Birthday Rachel!"

My point was obvious... because even an 8 year old completely understands the feeling of being forgotten and overlooked on their special day.  Especially this 8 year old once-orphan, who HAD been forgotten and overlooked for the first 7 birthdays of her life!  It is appalling and embarrassing to admit the truth.... This is exactly how we have treated Jesus on His birthday year, after year, after year!

"How, then," I asked them, "can we give Jesus a present for His birthday?"  They seemed excited to hear the answer.  I opened my Bible to Matthew 25 and began to read....
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

God's point here is so much clearer than my feeble attempts on the subject.  I wish I could say that I had gleaned this timeless truth through my own search of the Bible.  But I didn't.  I had honestly never read this passage in view of Christ-honoring gift-giving, until I heard the words of a song my own daughter wrote 3 Christmases ago....

Jesus, it’s your day
Is this really the way we celebrate?
With so many gifts under the tree
There’s nothing there for you
But plenty we don’t need

 Our lists keep growing
There’s always something new
Traditions keep going
But we’ve forgotten you

 You are hungry and thirsty
With no where to stay
You are cold, You’re so alone
Jesus, Happy Birthday
The song goes on, and so could I...  but I don't think I need to!  God's obvious solution for saying "I love you" to Him through gifts is in giving gifts to "the least of these".  In our language, we would call them the "most insignificant" among us!   If Christmas is really the celebration of Jesus' birthday, is there anyway He could have been more clear about His wish-list?  If we want to say "I love you, Jesus!", then we will say it best when we give sacrificially to "the least of these".

There will be very few gifts under our tree this year and we've all decided together that we like it that way!  We have spent the last few weeks thinking of every possible "insignificant" person that God has given us the opportunity to reach out to and we are sending gifts around the world and straight to Jesus instead!!!

And the best part?  We are overflowing with joy!!!  It has been an absolute thrill to bring the offerings we have, from our piggy banks and wallets, and join them together to make a difference for Jesus this year!  Our hearts have been changed as we've prayed for the orphans in India, for a van for Johnson so that he can drive those orphans to school, for John Monger and his ministry to refugees, and for the homeless we pass on the sidewalk.  We've shopped for Jesus, we've packed boxes for Jesus, we've written letters for Jesus.... and last night Rachel emerged from her room with this~

Rachel might only have "half of a heart" right now- but it overflows with love for Jesus!  I don't think I could have said it better than this precious child did in this letter!....

"Happy Birthday Jesus!  We love you!!!"
